SNS… Sexy Not Screwed

It’s been a whole month — but I’ve been working on JjoyC … I have mentioned that I’m a designer myself, and I have yet to blog about my stuff…

I’ve worked on lots of collaborative and/or commissioned projects, but this is the first of my very own…

I do design work in the home decor, jewelry, accessory, and clothing genres — JjoyC is my home for jewelry design (for now) — I’ll add some home decor stuff in the next few months

I use semi-precious, crystal, pearl, lucite, multi-strand chains… and I make cameos… lots of cameos

I’m giving my place a makeover, and as I am making decisions about what it is that I want… it dawns on me that it is a really good thing I live solo… Most of what I am loving is pink, over-the-top feminine, and unapologetically so! From unbelievable dresses to totally unique and compliment grabbing jewelry to fashion forward super stylish handbags… BJ covers all the bases… for all the detail and quality the prices are amazing. These are a few of my favorites, but I never find anything I don’t like!!

Tarina Tarantino is one of my most favorite jewelry designers, and her website happens to be a favorite as well…

If you dig Tarina, and you have yet to check out the “Tarina’s World” link on her site, you gotta!

Along with freebies, like desktop wallpaper and AIM icons, there is a ton of info about the jewelry line… company background in the form of a storybook… and — something I just discovered — Sparkling Cinema — loads of streaming video footage taken at the Milan Boutique opening, photo shoots, and more more more

I love that she lets us into her creative process.

Tarina’s site was designed by Small Dog Workshop… for those of you interested… the designer has a book of super cool projects… and a boutique!

You should also check out Swindle’s article on Tarina … she talks about her inspirations, how she is able to churn out so much good stuff for us, and provides a little insight about fakes…

I went off on Tokidoki for the whole trademark fiasco in an earlier blog post, and my feelings about that are pretty much the same… I really like that Tarina comes at it from a concern about buyers — us — she doesn’t like the idea of being misrepresented — she doesn’t like the idea of us getting screwed ;)

The Swindle article ends by taunting us with a fine jewelry collection by Tarina Tarantino… I’m jazzed… given how amazing her fashion jewelry is… it is sure to be SEXY, and embody the other overwhelmingly large category of all things fabulous that Tarina does!

How the hell does a heart and crossbones become a registered trademark?

What should the myriad of people that have this tattoo have done now that Tokidoki has ownership of it?

Lame, not classy, not sexy… greedy … sucks, cause I really dig the graphics of Simone Legno (designer from Italy behind Tokidoki)

But not enough to grant her the ownership and sole right to the use of an image that is used / has been used by baddass artists (loads of tattoo artists) long before everyone decided to bite Japanese / Harajuku / Gothic Lolita style as hard as they could and call it authentic. (as long as we are talking about ripping off other people’s ideas / creativity / style).

Don’t get me wrong… Japanese fashion magazines are the only ones that I read anymore, and the style… from the layout and graphic design work to the clothes to the way the photos are shot… is seriously inspiring… but I have to give credit where it’s due…

Similar color schemes that show up in my work are influenced by my serious obsession with that style… I’m not about to call it mine… Whatever is unique to me and my work is added… but the whole belongs to the whole

I’m not trying to trademark it, or get upset when someone does it better than I do.

I can understand not wanting to have your gear knocked off… but seriously … that move totally conflicts with the whole “positive” - dream inspiring - whimsical “about” message on the page

…there is just something that makes the whole thing fake itself … it was a really cool tribute…but after reading all the details about eBay sellers, and where to report items that may be fake - and they promise to follow up on every report -

I just have to wonder whay they aren’t doing something like releasing new products instead…

you know… “spreading positivity”
